I use the repo for my desktop and thinkpad both running 12.0-RELEASE. I switched to poudriere a few month ago and Im happy with it. To follow this step: Launch paprefs (PulseAudio Preferences) > 'Network Server' tab > Check 'Enable network access to local sound devices' (you may check 'Dont require authentication' to avoid mounting cookie file described below). The third and recommended option is using ports-mgmt/poudriere or ports-mgmt/synth to build your own pkg repository with customizations.

I used ports-mgmt/portmaster and pkg lock for 2 years after switching to FreeBSD but mixing pkg and ports is not recommended because you can run into major problems especially with dependencies. Or you can use pkg(8) and build only the ports where you need customization. In such a case you have 3 options:įirst building everything from ports which can be annoying on desktops/laptops. Just in case my GUI could be useful to anybody else, I posted it on the web. for sound in virtualbox vms I had to enable pulseaudio. Thats why I decided to write a web frontend on top of my PulseAudio server (the GUI is actually using pacmd to get and send data from/to PulseAudio). I have 3-4 packages where I need some changes to the default options, e.g. But building all the sw you need from source can be a time consuming exercise.

There were also a couple of extra tweaks needed for audio passthrough using PulseAudio and setting a windowed resolution.

Specifically, the communication to VcXsrv was being blocked by Windows Firewall. When you need customized versions, then you need ports. I found a guide that runs through the process but found that a few tweaks needed to be made. But packages are build against the default settings (options) and these are up to the maintainer of a port. Using pkg(8) for a desktop/laptop is suited in 99% of cases.
